Bloggers are able to break stories before the traditional news media is able to do so. Blogs are becoming a more important part of the news cycle in part because of their exposure to millions of users over a powerful medium called the internet. People can just hit the refresh button to receive updates in news and opinion. Blogs are a product and a beneficiary of the 24-hour news cycle. When news breaks, blogs can provide valuable insight otherwise not available. Several years ago during hurricane Katrina the bloggers were providing colorful commentary on the happenings in New Orleans. People were using blogs in order to get the information fast and in real-time. People can read trending news from a blog on-demand, with little reporting delay.
News sites are predicated on loyal followings. Loyal followers are looking for stories where something good or bad happens in government so they can point it out to the opposition. The people who follow the blogs are waiting for the news to come out so they can start a debate or a discussion with people. Trending news is something that could go away quickly, but still stick out in people’s mind if they found the news topic to be amusing. News sites and blogs will try to report amusing stories from time to time in order to lighten the mood.
People turn to blogs for their news because they feel that the blogs are more accessible. Many consumers feel that they are perfectly capable of writing a blog story or other piece for a news site that people can enjoy. Blogging on trending news topics is like writing a newspaper story if you are the “Average Joe”. People are interested in breaking or trending news in a variety of subjects. People like to read entertainment and political news sites. There can be a lot of fast-moving, ever-changing parts in these two genres. A blogger does want to check their facts if they want to move up to more widely read blogs from time to time, but other people are just looking for snippets or gossip when they are looking at trending news topics.
Bloggers also have to keep track of what is going in the search engines, what happens to be the trending news? What are the hot topics? You have to stay on top of what readers want when it comes to trending news as a blogger.
